Okay... it's sort of like a version of "hot or not" for music. OurStage lets bands enter their music in a monthly contest which is judged by users of the site. The concept behind it is simple and powerful. Users are presented with two randomly-selected songs on a page; listen to each one and decide which one is better (and by how much). Near the end of the month, when the top ten finalists have been selected, users text their picks for the winner to OurStage using a cellphone.... and we've made it to the quarter-finals for January!!
OurStage is addictive, and has the feel of something that could blow up for a number of reasons: it's fun to use, gives people a way to listen more actively, and acts as a collaborative A&R department for indie musicians, effectively pushing the artists who deserve it up the long tail.
Winners in each of the 9 genres get a check from OurStage, and the grand prize winner across the genres gets $5,000 -- definitely enough to tempt us to ask you to vote for us. Click the image below and try out Outstage:

Fire Apes set to perform at POPAsheville Music Festival
The Fire Apes, an Indie Rock/Powerpop band from Charleston, SC, will be performing as part of the POPAsheville Festival on January 20th, at 9:00 pm at Stella Blue in Asheville, North Carolina.
The Fire Apes were one of 34 bands from around the Southeast US chosen to perform at this emerging 2-day festival that takes place January 19-20th at several venues in Asheville, NC. It is the first venue-based music festival ever held in Asheville. This is The Fire Apes' first POPAsheville appearance.
POPAsheville supports a thriving scene for modern touring bands and recognizes the importance of community and information sharing within this scene. In the midst of a highly transitional music industry, the festival seeks to bolster partnerships between touring bands and to amplify Asheville's presence on the national music map.
Festivalgoers can purchase an all-access wristband online in advance at the festival website (www.popasheville.com), or at select festival locations (The Grey Eagle, Orbit DVD, Harvest Records, Stella Blue, Static Age Records, and Honeypot). Cost of the all-access wristband is $15. Tickets for individual shows may be purchased the night of show, based on availability, for $10.
The festival also includes a Music Biz Discussion Panel at The Rocket Club, Sunday, Jan. 20 from 1-3:30pm. The Panel is an informative session regarding news and issues important to Indie musicians. Led by a panel of experienced industry pros, the discussion will cover topics such as recent changes in the music industry, strategies for making a go of it as an Indie, and resources for the Indie musician.
The Fire Apes, consisting of John Seymour on lead guitar and vocals, Julian Volpe on bass and vocals, Hugh Knight on keyboards, and Aron Robinson on drums, are currently touring the Southeast US in support of their latest single "Hey Kate!"

The Fire Apes, an Indie Rock/Powerpop band from Charleston, SC, consists of John Seymour on lead guitar and vocals, Julian Volpe on bass and backing vocals, Hugh Knight on keyboards, and Aron Robinson on drums.
The distinction is not the first for the band, having emerged as AirSpun's monthly winner in September. The year also saw them named the winners of the Net Music Maker's Live Band competition in January, College of Charleston's Battle of the Bands in March, and 96 Wave's Locals Only Live Competition in June.
Early success with their first single, "Hey Kate!" placed them on the radio map and the band is poised for a breakout in 2008. The song caught the attention of Adam Curry's on his Daily Source Code Podcast, and was spotlighted on MyCoke.com. Chart recognition followed in recent months; this time with the college, internet, and terrestrial radio markets. "This is EXACTLY what radio listeners are looking for", states Jay Anderson, at Popbang radio based in St. Paul, MN.
Positioned on commercial and college radio charts has not been the only positive movement for The Fire Apes. Respected musician site GarageBand.com has also generated recognition, this time with the fans; where "Hey Kate!" twice garnered Track of the Day and Track of the Week honors, and continues to rise on their charts.
